Yala compared with Udawalawe, Wilpattu and Minneriya

Leopard relaxing on tree branch in sun-dappled forest, surrounded by green foliage and warm light.

The right safari park in Sri Lanka depends on the animal you came for and the town you already booked. Yala is the south-east mixed-wildlife jeep we run, with a leopard chance that is never a promise. Udawalawe is a different ticket around a reservoir grassland. Wilpattu and Minneriya sit in other regions and need their own night. They do not replace a Tissamaharama dawn.

  • Book Yala if you are already on the south-east coast and want a mixed morning, including a leopard chance.
  • Book Udawalawe if elephant herds on open grassland are the only job. That is not a Yala Block 1 permit.
  • Wilpattu is a north-west forest of villu wetlands. It is not a side trip after a Yala boom.
  • Minneriya’s tank-bed elephant concentration depends on receding water and grass. It is not a fixed calendar show.
  • From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Yala Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. We then run Galge, or you change park.

How to choose a park

Each national park is its own Department of Wildlife Conservation permit, gate and clock. A visitor may enter with a permit, on the conditions set by the department. One jeep cannot hold two parks before breakfast. Tell us the animal and the hotel before the permit is cut.

We arrange private Yala jeeps. The booking page for the Yala-or-Udawalawe choice is Yala vs Udawalawe. We do not drive Wilpattu or Minneriya from a Tissa hotel. Tickets, blocks and the wider Yala plan sit in the complete Yala tour guide.

The Yala National Park official site, checked 22 September 2026, places Yala 260 km south-east of Colombo. That figure starts in Colombo. It is not a drive time from Galle, Tangalle or a Wilpattu gate. Park hours there are 6am to 6pm. Yala was made a park on 1 March 1938. The same site’s about page counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. Do not read those counts as a sighting list for one morning. The Yala wildlife list is the animal page for this park.

Park comparison

Use this table as a route match, not a ranking. We sell Yala jeeps. Udawalawe is a different park ticket. Wilpattu and Minneriya are different nights in different provinces.

Park Who it suits Where you sleep What we book
Yala (Block 1 or Galge) South-east mixed safari, including a leopard chance Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana or Kataragama Our private jeep
Udawalawe Open grassland elephant herds A base near that reservoir, not a Palatupana queue A different ticket; see the Udawalawe booking page
Wilpattu Quieter dry forest and villu lakes North-west, towards Puttalam or Anuradhapura Not added to a Yala dawn
Minneriya Tank-bed elephant concentration when grass is exposed Cultural Triangle, near Polonnaruwa or Habarana Not aded to a Yala dawn
Checked 22 September 2026. Sleep near the gate you will actually use. A sighting is never a promise.

Yala, when the job is a south-east morning

Yala is the park we staff. Palatupana and Katagamuwa open Block 1. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6. We do not sell Block 3 or 4 as a tourist jeep. From Tissamaharama, Palatupana is about 20 to 25 minutes. From that same Tissa base, Galge adds about 20 to 30 minutes compared with Palatupana. Both times start in Tissa. The official site’s gate table measures Katagamuwa at 14 km, Galge at 30 km and Palatupana at 41 km from Kataragama. Those kilometres start in Kataragama, not at a beach hotel.

From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed as a drought rest. Blocks 3, 4, 5 and 6 remain open. We then run Galge. Do not treat October waterholes as refilled. If the reopen date moves, the hotel can stay and the gate changes.

We collect Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM for a morning jeep. You are in the park from 6:00 AM to about 10:30 AM. An afternoon drive is about 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. A coast hotel outside that list is a separate transfer, quoted on its own. Leopard behaviour and the jeep clock sit on leopard sightings in Sri Lanka. Morning versus afternoon is a separate slot page.

A private half-day Yala jeep starts from USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. A full-day private jeep starts from USD 72 per person in a group of six. A USD 30 deposit holds the vehicle. Foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT; the Yala safari price guide keeps the tariff split. Our quote is a private jeep of up to six. We do not sell a shared jeep.

Udawalawe, when the job is elephants

Udawalawe is the elephant park on a different ticket. Sabaragamuwa provincial tourism, checked 22 September 2026, says the park was declared in 1972 to protect fauna and the catchment of the Udawalawe reservoir, after the Walawe River development. It sits across Ratnapura and Monaragala districts. The same page describes herds feeding on grassland. That is why people book it. It is not a count of animals you will see, and it is not a Yala tank.

The official Yala site’s wildlife directory calls Udawalawe the country’s premier elephant park around that reservoir. We do not copy a headcount from that directory. A herd at a Yala waterhole is still a mixed Block 1 morning, not the Udawalawe job. An Udawalawe desk cannot hold our Yala jeep. We do not stop for a feeding show, and there is no elephant ride on our vehicle.

If elephants are the only goal, say so before a Palatupana permit is cut. The commercial comparison for that pair is Yala vs Udawalawe.

Wilpattu, a separate north-west night

Wilpattu is not a side trip from Tissa. The official Yala wildlife directory describes it as among the oldest protected areas, stretching from the north-western coast towards Anuradhapura, with a complex of lakes called villus set in scrub jungle. The same page lists elephant, sloth bear, water buffalo, spotted deer and leopard. A 2013-era visitor guide used for the park describes villu as shallow, saucer-shaped wetlands, some freshwater and some brackish, and notes Ramsar listing that year. We do not print a kilometre from Colombo to a Wilpattu boom, because we have not measured that door.

A Sri Lanka environment ministry framework records Wilpattu as a reserve under the Forest Ordinance in 1905 and a national park on 25 February 1938. The Department of Wildlife Conservation protected-areas page names Yala and Wilpattu among the older national parks. Ask a Yala tracker to add Wilpattu after 6:00 PM and the answer is no. The permit, the hotel and the forest are a different day.

Minneriya, tank-bed grass not a timetable

Minneriya sits in the North Central Province, about 20 km from Polonnaruwa on the official Yala wildlife directory. The gathering people ask for is elephants on grass exposed as the Minneriya reservoir recedes. A 2021 paper in Gajah, with former DWC director-general Sumith Pilapitiya among the authors, ties monthly elephant numbers at the reservoir to grassland availability. The authors did not see the high counts often advertised, and they link later water supply from Moragahakanda to a weaker seasonal drop in water level. Up to an estimated 400 elephants at Minneriya and Kaudulla is an earlier literature figure, not a visitor odds table.

Do not treat July to October as a guaranteed spectacle. If the tank is held high for irrigation, the grass can stay underwater. That park is a Cultural Triangle night, not a Palatupana queue. Kaudulla is a neighbouring tank corridor on the same directory. We do not fold either into a Yala jeep.

Bundala and Kumana

Bundala is a separate national park in Hambantota District. The official Yala wildlife directory describes its lagoons as a haven for migratory and resident waterbirds. It is west along the coast from Tissa, not inside a Yala permit. A flamingo or wader morning is a second ticket, usually another day.

Kumana, formerly Yala East, lies on the east coast, 12 km south of Arugam Bay on the same directory, and is separated from Yala by the Kumbukkan Oya. It is a bird park for that coast, not a Tissa add-on.

FAQ

Is Yala better than Udawalawe?

Only if the goal is a south-east mixed safari with a leopard chance. Udawalawe is the better match when elephant herds on open grassland are the only goal. They are not the same morning.

Which park is best for elephants?

Udawalawe is the park people book for herds around a reservoir. Yala still shows elephants on many Block 1 mornings. That is not why we collect at 5:30 AM. Minneriya can concentrate elephants on tank-bed grass when the water is allowed to recede. That concentration is not a promise.

Can I visit two parks in one day?

Not on our dawn Yala jeep. One permit, one gate, one tracker. A second park is a second booking, usually another day.

Does a Yala price include Udawalawe?

No. A private Yala half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of six, with Yala park fees included. Udawalawe is a different ticket. A USD 30 deposit holds the Yala jeep we actually reserve.

Is Bundala part of a Yala jeep?

No. Bundala is a separate permit in Hambantota District. The 5:30 AM Yala line goes to Palatupana, or to Galge when Blocks 1 and 2 are closed.

If you want a private Yala jeep with a clear park choice, browse Yala safari tours or open private Yala safari. Send the date, the hotel, the guest count, and whether the goal is a leopard chance or elephant herds. We hold the Yala vehicle with a USD 30 deposit.
