Yala Safari Zones

Sunset river in Yala National Park with two birds on dead trees, used in the complete Yala tour guide

Yala safari zones are the blocks inside the park, not the booms on the road. Block 1 opens from Palatupana or Katagamuwa. Block 5 opens from Galge. We book Block 1 first when it is open, and we move to Block 5 when Blocks 1 and 2 are on rest.

Key takeaways

  • A zone is the block you drive. A gate is only the entrance that opens that block.
  • Block 1 is the first safari we sell, from Palatupana or Katagamuwa. Block 5 is the Galge zone, and the one we use when Block 1 is closed.
  • Blocks 1 and 2 are closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we sell.
  • Gate distances sit on the map page. This page is the choice of zone.
  • A private half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of six, with park fees in. A sighting is not a promise.

This page is the zones spoke. Use the complete Yala tour guide for the month table and tickets. Distances and the route to each boom are on the gate map, linked below, so this article does not repeat them as if they were a second map.

A zone is not a gate

Guests mix the two, then arrive at Palatupana for a Block 5 booking. The ranger cannot drive you across to Galge from that queue. The permit, the tracker, and the jeep are for one block on one morning.

Palatupana and Katagamuwa both open Block 1. Galge opens Block 5. There is no public “Block 2 gate” we put on a standard quote, and we do not sell Blocks 3 or 4 as a first jeep. If a hotel calls every entrance a zone, ask which block the permit names before you pay a deposit.

Zone Gate that opens it What we do with it
Block 1 Palatupana or Katagamuwa First safari when the block is open
Block 2 Limited public access Not a standard quote. Closed with Block 1 in the 2026 rest
Blocks 3 and 4 Restricted We do not sell these as a jeep
Block 5 Galge Second drive, or the zone during the Block 1 rest

Block 1

Block 1 is the zone we book for a first dry-season morning. Palatupana is the usual boom from a Tissamaharama, Kirinda, or Palatupana hotel. Katagamuwa is the same block from a Kataragama hotel. You do not get a different zone by switching those two gates. You only change the drive to the queue.

Park hours on an open block are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We collect those hotels at 5:30 AM so you are in the line before the boom. A half-day morning is in the park from about 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM. An extended morning stays out until about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM. Morning is the booking we make first. We still do not promise a leopard.

Kilometres from Kataragama, and which hotel should use which boom, are on the Yala gate location map. The same distances are on the Yala National Park official site. This zones page will not invent a second set of kilometres.

Block 2

Block 2 has limited public access. It is quieter when it is open, and it is not the zone on a normal private-jeep quote. From 14 September to 15 October 2026 it closes with Block 1. A guest who asks for “the quiet block” in that window is not moved into Block 2. The open zone we run then is Block 5.

Do not treat old blog lines about Block 2 elephants as a plan you can book. If the Department of Wildlife Conservation has not opened that block to your permit, the jeep cannot enter it. Tell us if someone has offered Block 2 by name, and we will say whether that morning is actually Block 1 or Block 5.

Blocks 3 and 4

Blocks 3 and 4 stay on the conservation side of the map. We do not sell them as a safari. A quote that names those blocks as a tourist jeep is not one of ours. The zones a guest can actually book with us are Block 1, when it is open, and Block 5.

That limit is the useful part of Yala safari zones. Five numbers on a map are not five products. Two of them are the drives we run. The others are not a hidden upgrade.

Block 5

Block 5 is the Galge zone. It is scrub, lagoons, and fewer vehicles than the Palatupana circuit. Leopards live there. We track pugmarks and alarm calls, and we do not sell a guaranteed sighting. Use it for a second morning, so you are not repeating the same Block 1 loop, or for any date inside the Block 1 rest.

From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Palatupana and Katagamuwa do not run Block 1. Galge is the boom. From Tissa that drive is longer than Palatupana, so we add 20 to 30 minutes to the hotel pickup and still aim for a 6:00 AM entry. Sleep near Tissa or Kataragama. A 5:30 AM start from Ella, Bentota, or Unawatuna spends the cool hour on the road.

The September closure, and why we do not sell that month as the strongest Block 1 window, is on the September opening page. July, when Block 1 is open and hot, is a different article.

Which zone we book

The practical choice among Yala safari zones is two drives, not five. For a first safari on an open date, the zone is Block 1. For a second safari, Block 5 covers new ground. During 14 September to 15 October 2026, every morning we still run is Block 5, unless the Department of Wildlife Conservation moves the dates. We confirm the block the night before. If the rest is extended, the hotel can stay and the zone changes, or we reschedule at no extra charge.

The cab price does not change because the zone name sounds rarer. Official Block 1 jeep hire is LKR 21,450 for a half-day and LKR 31,350 for a full day, tickets excluded. Galge is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. Prices checked 22 September 2026. Our private half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of six, with park fees in. A full day starts from USD 72. A USD 30 deposit holds the jeep.

A foreign adult permit still starts at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. The bands are on the Yala National Park entrance fee page. If the only question left is whether to book Block 1 or Block 5 as a package, use the Block 1 or Block 5 page. That one is the booking choice. This page only explains the zones.

If you already know the date and the hotel, book a private morning jeep. Send the guest count. We name the zone in the confirmation, not only the gate.

FAQ

What are the Yala safari zones?

Yala safari zones are Blocks 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. We sell Block 1 and Block 5. Block 2 has limited public access. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we offer.

Which gate opens Block 1?

Palatupana or Katagamuwa. Both are the same zone. Palatupana is the usual boom from Tissamaharama. Katagamuwa suits a Kataragama hotel.

Is Block 5 the same as Galge?

Galge is the gate. Block 5 is the zone beyond it. Asking for Galge and asking for Block 5 should be the same morning. If a quote splits them, ask which permit you are buying.

Can I visit Block 2?

Not on a standard quote. Access is limited, and from 14 September to 15 October 2026 Block 2 is closed with Block 1. The open zone in that window is Block 5.

Do the zones change the jeep price?

The from-price on our packages does not change between Block 1 and Block 5. Official park-site hire is slightly higher at Galge, and those LKR lines exclude tickets. Six seats is still the maximum in the Toyota.
