- FAQ
Also, guests ask for a leopard, an elephant, and a peacock in one frame. So that is three chances, not one stop. Also, each animal uses a different light. Therefore we lock the 5:30 AM door the night before.
Also, charge the phone before you sleep. So a dead battery at the boom wastes the only cool hour. Meanwhile, a flash on an animal is not our practice. Then the animal stays wild, and you stay in the seat.
Also, tell us the hotel and the guest count the night before we cut the permit. So a Tissa room means the Palatupana line. A Kataragama room can use Katagamuwa. Also, six is the max in our Toyota. Therefore a seventh guest needs a second jeep, and that second jeep is a second quote. Meanwhile, a USD 30 deposit holds the cab we actually lock.
So pack the camera in the cabin bag, not in the hotel safe. Also, the 5:30 AM door does not wait for a lens left on the table. Then you are in the seat with the kit you meant to use. However, we still roll if the only camera is the phone in your pocket.
Morning light for a leopard frame
Block 1 holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. The useful frames on these Yala National Park photos are the ones you take before 10:30 AM. However, a sighting is still not a promise. We book the dawn because cats hunt early, not because a permit lists a cat.
So Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes from Tissamaharama. Also, we collect Tissa, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM. Then you are in the Block 1 line before the 6:00 AM boom.
Also, stay in the seat. The tracker stops. You shoot from the rail. However, getting out for a closer frame is not allowed. So ask which side of the jeep faces the animal before he cuts the engine.
Meanwhile, a phone into the sun is a black shape. Also, a peacock on the track and a buffalo at the tank are the frames we still get when the cat stays in cover. Then the morning is not an empty card.
In addition, the morning list still names elephant, sloth bear, sambar, jackal, spotted deer, peacock, and crocodile. The about page counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. So the brief is shorter than the full count, and one jeep is not a guarantee.
What else fills the frame?
Also, painted storks and peacocks use the open ground when the tanks are low. So a bird frame is often the second card of the morning. However, we do not stop on a nest, and we do not feed an animal for a picture. Meanwhile, the tracker picks the stop. Then you shoot, and we roll.
So a crocodile at the tank edge is a common frame, and it is still a wild animal. Also, keep your arms inside the rail. Therefore a closer shot is not worth a reach over the side. Instead, let the tracker place the jeep, and use the light you already have.
What time should I shoot?
So start at the 6:00 AM boom. Also, the stronger leopard window runs until about 10:30 AM. Then heat and shade take over.
Which gate we use for the shot
Palatupana into Block 1, from a Tissa hotel. A Kataragama room can use Katagamuwa instead. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, so we run Galge.
| Gate | From Kataragama | Block | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Palatupana | 41 km | Block 1 | Default dawn, Tissa hotels |
| Katagamuwa | 14 km | Block 1 | A Kataragama hotel |
| Galge | 30 km | Block 5 | Rest dates, fewer jeeps |
Katagamuwa is 14 km from Kataragama and also opens Block 1. Meanwhile, Galge is the Block 5 gate, 30 km from Kataragama. Palatupana is 41 km from Kataragama. Those distances sit on the Yala National Park official site. Last updated: September 2026.
Also, the park sits 260 km southeast of Colombo. So a guest who lands late should sleep near Tissa for a dawn frame, not drive through the night. Galle and Unawatuna leave about 1:45 AM because that drive is about 170 km.
Which gate is better in the morning?
So Palatupana, from a Tissa hotel. Also, Katagamuwa suits a Kataragama room. However, Galge is the gate when Blocks 1 and 2 are closed.
How Yala National Park photos change by season
February to July is the dry window the Yala about page names, because the tanks drop and animals use the open ground. Also, June and July are the peak months we see for leopards in Block 1. So book the jeep before you land.
From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. Therefore a Palatupana queue will not open. So we move that morning to Galge. However, if the reopen date moves, the hotel can stay and the gate changes.
| Months | What we book |
|---|---|
| Feb to Jul | Driest window, open ground at the tanks |
| Jun to Jul | Peak leopard months in Block 1, same 5:30 AM start |
| 14 Sep to 15 Oct 2026 | Blocks 1 and 2 closed, so Galge |
| Nov to Jan | Northeast monsoon, higher grass, confirm the block the night before |
Meanwhile, park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM. For example, we leave a Tissa hotel about 1:00 PM. However, dawn is still the stronger booking for a leopard frame.
Also, a full day runs from the 5:30 AM pickup to the 6:00 PM boom. So you get the cool hour and the warmer afternoon light in one permit. Instead, two half-days are two tickets if you want a rest at the hotel.
Is afternoon light worth it?
So yes, for a peacock or a buffalo in warmer light. Also, leopard odds drop after 10:30 AM. Therefore we do not sell the afternoon as the cat plan.
Jeep setup for Yala National Park photos
So a private half-day jeep on our packages starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of 6, with park fees in. Also, full-day private jeeps start from USD 72 per person in a group of six. Meanwhile, a USD 30 deposit holds the jeep. Then the room is a separate bill.
Meanwhile, official Block 1 jeep hire, tickets excluded, is LKR 21,450 half-day and LKR 31,350 full-day. Also, Galge jeep hire is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. However, foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. Last updated: September 2026.
Also, our quote is a private jeep of up to six. So you choose the side of the seat and the clock. Instead, you do not share the tracker with strangers who want a different gate.
Also, a shared jeep is a different product. Strangers pick the animal, and you lose the side of the seat you wanted. So our quote stays private. In addition, the driver and the tracker are the only other people who should be in the cab with your group. Meanwhile, children count toward the six seats, the same as adults.
So there is no elephant ride on our jeep, and there is no feeding stop for a picture. Also, the animal stays wild. Then you stay in the seat until the 6:00 PM boom, or until the half-day ends near 10:30 AM.
In addition, a long lens helps a cat in shade, and a phone is enough for a peacock on the track. So bring the kit you already own. However, we do not stop the line so you can change a lens at the boom.
Does the jeep price include a guide?
So the tracker rides with the driver. Also, the private half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of 6, with park fees in. Instead, a camera is your own kit.
Wilpattu, Udawalawe, and Yala National Park photos
So Wilpattu is not a side trip from Tissa. Also, it sits in the north and needs its own night. So do not ask a Yala driver to add it after the 6:00 PM boom. Also, the tracker, the permit, and the hotel are a different day.
Meanwhile, Udawalawe is the elephant park. Also, the park wildlife page puts about 500 elephants there. So a guest who wants herd frames, not a leopard chance, should say so before we lock Palatupana. However, a herd at a Yala tank is common, and it is still not the Udawalawe job.
If you want the 5:30 AM pickup and a seat for the camera, book a private morning jeep. Send the date, the hotel, and the guest count. We lock the cab with a USD 30 deposit.
Is Udawalawe better for elephant photos?
So yes, when herds are the only goal. Also, the park wildlife page puts about 500 elephants there. Meanwhile, Yala still shows elephants on many Block 1 mornings.
Can I leave the jeep for a photo?
No. Also, you shoot from the seat. So the tracker stops, and you stay inside until the gate.
