Morning safari: the 5:30 AM pickup

A morning safari is the 6:00 AM entry. We meet you at 5:30 AM so you are in the Palatupana line before the boom lifts. The first two hours are the hunt we actually want.

Block 1 holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. Cats finish overnight hunts in that cool window. By 9:00 AM the tarmac cooks. Leopards slide into shade. You can still find them. You work harder.

Do not self-drive to the fence at 6:15 AM hoping to hire a cab. The permit, tracker, and jeep are one plan. You sleep in the seat. We go straight to the desk.

Wear a light fleece at 5:30 AM. You will peel it off by 8:00 AM. Bring passports. The clerk records nationality in LKR, not in a WhatsApp screenshot.

Afternoon safari: 1:30 PM to close

An afternoon safari usually enters after 1:30 PM. We pick Tissa around 1:00 PM so you are not last in the 2:30 PM crush. You stay until the 6:00 PM close, or until the light dies.

Midday heat from about 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM pushes animals into shade and water. After 4:00 PM the second window opens. Elephants use tanks. Crocodiles stay on the banks. Leopards can move again. Odds are lower than dawn. The light is kinder for a camera.

From Tissa, Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes. Morning still wants you in that queue before 6:00 AM. Afternoon can afford a slower Tissa lunch. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. We run Galge on both clocks in that window.

Season, rest dates, and what the jeep costs

Official Block 1 jeep hire, tickets excluded, is LKR 21,450 half-day and LKR 31,350 full-day. Galge jeep hire is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. Foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT.

Wilpattu and Udawalawe use different clocks

Each park has its own boom and its own permit. A Wilpattu ranger cannot clear a Yala morning slot. An Udawalawe desk cannot hold our Palatupana afternoon jeep. Stay with Yala if leopards are the trip.
