The best route Ella to Yala for a safari clock is Ella–Wellawaya–Thanamalwila–Tissa–Palatupana. It is the line our drivers use for a 6:00 AM Block 1 slot. The hill section ends at Wellawaya. After that the road is straighter and faster.
Start in Ella town. Drop on the Wellawaya road. Then stay on the Thanamalwila road rather than cutting to Buttala, unless you have a Kataragama stop. From Thanamalwila, continue toward Tissamaharama. Palatupana is the last stretch to the ticket queue.
This road suits taxis and our jeep. It also suits a pre-dawn run, because Kataragama festival traffic is not on this line. In September the descent can still be wet. We take the hairpins slower and make the time up on the flat.
Alternative route via Buttala and Kataragama
The Buttala–Kataragama line is the sightseeing option, not the fastest safari option. It can work if you want Buduruwagala or a Kataragama hotel. Festival days add long delays. We avoid it for a 3:00 AM Palatupana run.
Use this route if you will sleep in Kataragama. Katagamuwa Gate is then the usual boom, not Palatupana. For a first leopard safari, Palatupana remains the better clock.

Yes, you can do a day trip from Ella. The usual pattern is a 3:00 AM pickup, a morning jeep, then a return to the hills or a drop on the south coast. It is a long day. Two drives need a bed in Tissa or Palatupana.
