Rangers asked jeeps to leave those two blocks so animals can drink without a queue of engines. Galge sits on the ButtalaāKataragama road. From Kataragama it is about 30 km. From Tissamaharama it is longer than Palatupana, so we add 20 to 30 minutes to the hotel pickup. Tell us the hotel name. Then we set the 5:30 AM call from the door, not from the Palatupana clock.

A 5:30 AM pickup from Mirissa or Ella is the wrong clock in any month. You spend the cool hour on the road. Sleep near Tissa or Kataragama the night before. Then the September Galge run is a normal safari day, not a transfer.

The best time to visit Yala for leopards is still February to July, with June and July the peak months in Block 1. September is a workable safari month if you accept Block 5 instead of Palatupana. It is not the month we sell as the strongest leopard window.

A Yala safari in September can still show elephants at tanks, mugger crocodiles, spotted deer, and birds. Leopards live in Block 5 too. The density is lower than the Palatupana circuit, and the bush is thicker, so you work harder for a sighting.
Light rain does not cancel a drive. We only pull the jeep if DWC closes the block. If Galge floods after a storm, we wait for the next open slot rather than forcing Palatupana.
Leopard density when Block 1 is closed
Block 1 holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. That is why Palatupana is the default first safari. When that block rests, you lose the busiest leopard tracks and you also lose the jeep circus that stacks on one cat.
Block 5 is not empty of leopards. It is a different circuit: scrub, lagoons, and fewer vehicles. We still track pugmarks, alarm calls, and fresh kills. We do not sell a guaranteed sighting in any month.
Morning remains the better window. Cats hunt at night and rest in shade by late morning. A 6:00 AM Galge entry is the September version of the 6:00 AM Palatupana plan. Afternoon light is kinder on photos. Leopard odds drop after 10:30 AM, the same as in Block 1.

Udawalawe is the shorter add-on from Tissa or the south coast. Wilpattu is not a same-day swap from Palatupana. We only quote Wilpattu when you have a spare night and a northbound transfer. For most September guests already in Tissa, Block 5 is the honest answer.
