Tangalle to Yala is a road journey east through Hambantota and Tissamaharama to a park boom. We do not publish a kilometre from a Tangalle hotel door to Palatupana, because we have not measured that door. A Tangalle hotel sits outside the 5:30 AM pickup list, so the transfer is quoted on its own. If you want the published 5:30 AM collection, sleep in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama.

The road from Tangalle
Tangalle is a south-coast town west of the park. The drive we book leaves the beach on the coastal road, passes Ambalantota and Hambantota, and then turns inland to Tissamaharama. When Block 1 is open, Palatupana is the boom beyond Tissa on that line. We do not add a town stop in Hambantota before a morning boom. A stop fits the drive back to the coast, after the jeep.
The park homepage, checked 22 September 2026, places Yala 260 km southeast of Colombo. That figure starts in Colombo. It is not a Tangalle trip. The same site’s gate table measures Katagamuwa at 14 km, Galge at 30 km, and Palatupana at 41 km from Kataragama. Those kilometres start in Kataragama. They do not start in Medilla, Rekawa, or Mawella.
From a Tissamaharama base, Palatupana is about 20 to 25 minutes. From that same Tissa base, Galge adds about 20 to 30 minutes compared with Palatupana. Both times start in Tissa. Neither time is a measured run from a Tangalle hotel door, so this page does not add the two legs together and call the sum a Tangalle drive.
Medilla, Rekawa, and Mawella are still Tangalle-side addresses. Name the hotel when you book. We price the car from that door. We do not print one alarm for every beach hotel on this stretch of coast. If you are already in Weerawila, say so. That door is not a Tangalle beach pickup, and it is still outside the 5:30 AM towns unless the hotel is in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama.
Train, bus, and car
The Sri Lanka Railways Coast Line station list, checked 22 September 2026, runs from Colombo Fort down the south coast. It records Matara at 156.813 km from Fort. That list does not include Tangalle, Hambantota, Tissamaharama, Palatupana, Kirinda, or a Yala station. A train can bring you along the coast as far as a station on the list. It does not finish the safari, and we do not publish a road time from the last station to a boom.
A bus can run from Tangalle toward Hambantota and Tissamaharama in daylight. You still need a jeep at a boom. A public bus is the wrong tool for a 6:00 AM entry, because the park opens then and the 5:30 AM collection is for hotels already in the four towns above. Use the bus if you will sleep in one of those towns and take the jeep the next morning.
The tool for a morning safari from a Tangalle hotel is a private car. Our driver can collect that hotel. The price sits apart from the jeep. It depends on the hotel and on whether the car returns you to the coast after the drive. Send the hotel name with the date and the guest count.
Park clocks and a quoted pickup
Park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We collect hotels in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama at 5:30 AM, so the jeep is at the boom for the 6:00 AM opening. The morning drive inside the park runs to about 10:30 AM. An extended morning runs to about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep runs from about 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. A full day runs from the 5:30 AM collection until 6:00 PM.
Those clocks belong to the four pickup towns. Tangalle is farther west, so a Tangalle collection is earlier than 5:30 AM, and the exact time is part of the quote. We do not publish one departure for Medilla, the Tangalle clock tower, Rekawa, and Mawella as if they were the same door. Afternoon entry is the easier sleep from the coast, because you leave after breakfast and we still aim at about 1:30 PM inside the park. Tell us the hotel and we will say whether that afternoon slot is realistic for that door.

One jeep, or a night nearer the boom
A single morning jeep from Tangalle is a quoted transfer, the jeep, and a return to the coast afterwards. Two jeeps, or a full day with an easy start, are simpler if you sleep in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama. Those beds are on the 5:30 AM list. We do not promise a return to Tangalle beach by a set hour, because the transfer is quoted from the door. For two jeeps, sleep in the 5:30 AM zone and name that hotel. We are based at Palatupana, so a hotel there, or in Tissa or Kirinda, removes the coast transfer from the morning.
Send four things with the enquiry: the date, the hotel name, the passport names, and whether you need the car back on the coast. Also say if you want a morning jeep, an afternoon jeep, or both. Which boom the road uses
A zone is not a gate. Block 1 is entered at Palatupana or at Katagamuwa. Block 2 has limited public access and closes with Block 1 during the 2026 rest. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we sell. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6. Gate kilometres and the difference between a boom and a block are on the Yala gate location map.
When Block 1 is open, a car coming from Tangalle through Tissamaharama uses Palatupana. Katagamuwa is the Block 1 boom on the Kataragama side. It is the boom to name if you sleep in Kataragama. It is not the default end of the Tangalle road, and it is not a back door into Block 5. Galge is the boom for the rest window, and also the boom if you specifically want Blocks 5 and 6 while Block 1 is open.
From 14 September to 15 October 2026 the park homepage closes Blocks 1 and 2. Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 stay open. In that window a Tangalle pickup goes to Galge on the morning clock and on the afternoon clock. We do not sell Situlpawwa, Buttala, or Block 3 as a tourist jeep. A leopard is not part of the booking. When Block 1 is open, most of our morning jeeps use that circuit from Tissa and Palatupana. That is how we run the jeep. It is not a sighting rate.
Jeep price and the transfer
Our jeep is private, for your group, up to six people, and it is not a self-drive. A half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. A full day starts from USD 72 on the same basis. Children aged 6 to 12 pay less, and children under 6 are usually free. Bring passports. The deposit is USD 30. Prices checked 22 September 2026. The Tangalle transfer is not inside that from-price. It is quoted by vehicle, hotel, and whether the car returns to the coast. The park’s own jeep hire page is a different bill. Tickets are not included. A private Toyota 4×4, up to six people, is LKR 21,450 for a Block 1 half-day at Palatupana or Katagamuwa, and LKR 31,350 for a full day. How far is Tangalle from Yala?
We do not publish a kilometre from a Tangalle hotel to Palatupana. The road runs through Hambantota and Tissamaharama. The park’s own kilometres are measured from Kataragama, and the 260 km line on the park homepage is from Colombo.
What route does Tangalle to Yala use?
The coastal road east through Hambantota, then Tissamaharama, then Palatupana when Block 1 is open. From 14 September to 15 October 2026 the same pickup goes to Galge.
Can I do a day trip from Tangalle to Yala?
Yes, as one jeep plus a quoted return to the coast. We do not print a fixed departure clock. Two jeeps are easier from a hotel in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama.
Is there a train from Tangalle to Yala?
