Yala National Park Wildlife

Water buffalo relax in a sunlit riverside scene with golden reflections and lush green grass.

Yala National Park wildlife is a Block 1 morning list, not a tour of every fence in the south. Also, the park about page counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. Then we collect the hotel at 5:30 AM for the 6:00 AM boom.

Key takeaways

  • The park about page counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. So the morning list is shorter than that.
  • Leopard, elephant, sloth bear, sambar, jackal, spotted deer, peacock, and crocodile are the animals that page names.
  • Block 1 holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. However, a sighting is still not a promise.
  • Leave at 5:30 AM for a 6:00 AM Palatupana entry. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed.
  • A private half-day jeep on our packages starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of 6. However, the room is separate.

So this page is the animal-list spoke. Use the complete Yala tour guide for tickets and the month table. Then we name the animals, the gate, and the hour we actually use.

Where Yala National Park wildlife actually shows

So Palatupana into Block 1 is the default morning. Then the animals use the tracks and the tanks before the tarmac heats up. Therefore we want the first two hours after the boom, not a late queue.

However, you cannot self-drive inside the fence. So the tracker sits in the front seat. Then we hold the jeep when deer freeze or a peacock alarms. Also, a second jeep that crowds the cat is how a sighting ends.

Also, do not ask us to leave the road. So the rule is the track. Also, a bear in scrub still counts. Meanwhile, an elephant that walks off into grass is still a sighting. Therefore we do not follow it on foot.

What animals can be seen in Yala?

So the animals the park about page names are leopard, elephant, sloth bear, sambar, jackal, spotted deer, peacock, and crocodile. That page also counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. So the full count is larger than the list we brief at 5:30 AM.

Also, those counts sit on the Yala National Park about page. Last updated: September 2026. However, we do not turn 44 names into a guarantee. For example, a morning can be deer, peacock, and one tank, with no cat.

Animal Where we look What we tell you
Leopard Block 1 tracks at dawn Highest-density block we use. Not a promise
Elephant Tanks and scrub Common. A herd is not a cat plan
Sloth bear Dry scrub Possible. Not every morning
Sambar Block 1 roads A regular stop
Spotted deer Open patches Alarm calls often mark a cat
Jackal Road edges Regular
Peacock Roadsides Common. The call carries
Crocodile Tanks We stop. We stay on the track

Also, the park what-to-do page puts about 90 water birds on the wetlands, and about half are migrants. Also, we point out Indian peafowl, painted stork, crested serpent eagle, and white-bellied sea eagle on the morning roads. So the rest of the 215 species is a birding trip, not the 5:30 AM brief.

Elephant sightings in Yala

So elephant sightings in Yala are a tank-and-scrub job. Also, we see them on many mornings in Block 1. However, a herd at a tank is not the reason we book the 5:30 AM door.

However, Udawalawe is the elephant park. Also, the park wildlife page puts about 500 elephants there. Therefore a guest who wants herds, not a leopard chance, should say so before we lock Palatupana.

Also, we do not stop for a feeding show. So there is no elephant ride on our jeep. Therefore the animal stays wild. Also, you stay in the seat.

Yala safari time for the animal list

Meanwhile, park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Also, we pick up Tissa, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM. Then you are in the Block 1 line before the boom lifts.

So the first two hours are the window we want. After that, by 9:00 AM the tarmac cooks and the cats move into cover. So a 7:30 AM hotel door is already late for the list above.

Meanwhile, an afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM and stays until 6:00 PM. For example, tanks can still hold elephants and crocodiles late. However, dawn is still the stronger booking for a leopard.

Safari Pickup near the park Why
Morning Block 1 5:30 AM 6:00 AM boom and the first two hours
Extended morning 5:30 AM Same start, out until about 12:30 PM
Afternoon About 1:00 PM from Tissa 1:30 PM entry until 6:00 PM
Full day 5:30 AM Both windows. Sleep near Tissa if you can

Which gate we use for the list

Palatupana is then 20 to 25 minutes from Tissamaharama and opens Block 1. Katagamuwa is 14 km from Kataragama and also opens Block 1. Meanwhile, Galge is the Block 5 gate, 30 km from Kataragama.

Gate From Kataragama Block Use it for
Katagamuwa 14 km Block 1 A Kataragama hotel
Galge 30 km Block 5 Rest dates. Fewer jeeps
Palatupana 41 km Block 1 Default morning list

Also, tell us the hotel the night before. Then we know which boom the 5:30 AM door belongs to. So Palatupana is the short run from Tissa. Instead, Katagamuwa is the short run from Kataragama.

Season for Yala National Park wildlife

February to July is the dry window the park about page names, because the tanks drop and animals use the open ground. Also, June and July are the peak months we see for leopards in Block 1. So book the jeep before you land.

From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. Therefore a Palatupana queue will not open. So we move the morning to Galge. However, if the reopen date moves, the hotel can stay and the gate changes.

Months What the morning looks like
Feb–Jul Driest park. Best window for the Block 1 list
Jun–Jul Peak leopard months in Block 1. Hottest days. The 5:30 AM start still applies
14 Sep–15 Oct 2026 Blocks 1 and 2 closed. Galge morning or afternoon
Nov–Jan Northeast monsoon. Grass is higher. Confirm the block the night before

A private half-day jeep on our packages starts from USD 57 per person in a jeep of 6, with park fees in. Full-day private jeeps start from USD 72 per person in a group of six. Also, a USD 30 deposit holds the jeep. Meanwhile, the room is a separate bill.

Meanwhile, official Block 1 jeep hire, tickets excluded, is LKR 21,450 half-day and LKR 31,350 full-day. Also, Galge jeep hire is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. However, foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. Last updated: September 2026.

Wilpattu and Yala National Park wildlife

So stay with Yala if one morning has to produce a chance at the Block 1 list. However, Wilpattu holds leopards, elephants, sloth bears, and spotted deer, and it needs its own night in the north. So an Udawalawe desk cannot hold our Yala jeep.

Park Pick it for From this booking
Yala Block 1 Leopard chance plus the morning list Palatupana or Katagamuwa
Udawalawe Elephant herds. About 500 on the park wildlife page A different ticket
Wilpattu Quieter forest. Leopards exist Needs a spare night

In addition, a shared jeep is a different product. Also, our quote is a private jeep of up to six. So you choose the clock. Therefore you do not share the tracker with strangers who want a different gate.

If you want the permit, the 5:30 AM pickup, and the jeep in one quote, book a private morning jeep. Then send the date, the hotel, and the guest count. Also, we lock the cab with a USD 30 deposit.

How many animals are in the park?

So the park about page counts 44 mammal varieties and 215 bird species. Also, the morning list we brief is leopard, elephant, sloth bear, sambar, jackal, spotted deer, peacock, and crocodile.

What time should I enter?

So enter at 6:00 AM. Then we collect the hotel at 5:30 AM. Also, the first two hours are the window we actually want.

Which gate is best for wildlife?

So Palatupana into Block 1. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, so we run Galge.

Is Udawalawe better for elephants?

However, yes, if herds are the only goal. So Udawalawe is a different ticket. Because of that, it does not replace a Yala leopard morning.
