Gate Locations and How to Get to Yala National Park
1) Palatupana Entrance (Main Gate)
Best for: Block 1 safaris (where you see the most leopards)
Location: Close to Palatupana or Palatupana Junction
Tissamaharama is the closest town (about 25–30 minutes by car).
Road access: From Tissamaharama, take Kirinda Road (B499) to Palatupana Road.
Most tour companies use this entrance.
Roads are in better shape.
This is where wildlife drives often start.
2) Katagamuwa Entrance
Best for: Quiet safaris and smaller groups
Location: Near Katagamuwa / Kataragama direction
Nearest town: Kataragama (~30–40 min)
Road access: From Kataragama → Buttala Road → Katagamuwa access track
Description:
Less traffic than Palatupana.
Good for early morning calm safari runs.
3) Galge Entrance
Best for: Deep safari zones, peaceful drives
Nearest town: Buttala (~20–30 min)
Road access: Tissamaharama or Buttala → farm roads → Galge access track
Description:
Fewer jeeps and fewer tourists.
Wild and remote feeling.
Often used for full-day safaris.
4) Block 5 Entrance
Best for: Birdwatchers and elephants
Nearest town: Buttala / Kataragama
Road access: Buttala – Kataragama road network → Block 5 access track
Description:
Access to Block 5 ecology zones.

5) Kumbukkan Oya / Awatune Entrance (Seasonal / Special Permits)
