Where is Yala National Park, and where are the gates?
Yala National Park sits in southeast Sri Lanka, about 260 km from Colombo. Tissamaharama is the usual hotel base. Kataragama is the other common start if you sleep on the temple side.
The park lists two named entry points on its public fact sheet: Palatupana (Gate 1) and Katagamuwa (Gate 2). Galge is the third boom we use every week, because it is the Block 5 entrance. Head office hours are 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Safari booms run 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

From Tissamaharama, Palatupana is the short run. Our drivers clock 20 to 25 minutes to that boom. Katagamuwa and Galge take longer from Tissa, so we add buffer if you sleep on the Tissa side and we are not using Palatupana.
Palatupana Gate
Palatupana Gate is the main Yala gate location for Block 1. It is the closest boom to Tissa, Kirinda, and the Palatupana lodges. If leopards are why you booked, this is the default line we join at 5:45 AM.
Block 1 holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. That is why Palatupana is busy. In peak months the queue stacks before the boom lifts. Arrive late and you start behind 40 jeeps, not in front of them.
Do not self-drive to Palatupana hoping to hire a jeep at the fence. Permits, tracker, and the vehicle are one plan. Our driver meets you at the hotel. You sleep in the seat. We go straight to the ticket desk.
Katagamuwa entrance
Katagamuwa entrance is still Block 1. It is not a different park. From Kataragama it is 14 km, which is why we use it when you sleep on that side. The Palatupana circus is usually thinner here at 6:00 AM.
Use Katagamuwa if Palatupana is packed, or if a Kataragama hotel pickup makes Palatupana a long backtrack. The first tracks differ. The leopard density is still Block 1, not Block 5. Sightings are not guaranteed at either boom.
Galge Gate and Block 5
Galge Gate is the Block 5 entrance. From Kataragama it is 30 km. From Tissa it is farther than Palatupana, so we add 20 to 30 minutes to the hotel pickup. Tell us the hotel name. Then we set the 5:30 AM call from the door.
Block 5 is scrub, lagoons, and fewer vehicles. Leopards live here too. The density is lower than the Palatupana circuit, and the bush is thicker. We still track pugmarks and alarm calls. We do not sell a guaranteed cat.
From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. Palatupana and Katagamuwa do not run Block 1 in that window. Galge is the boom we use. Confirm the night before. If DWC extends the rest, we stay on Galge or we reschedule at no extra charge.
Yala blocks versus Yala safari gates
The gate is not the same thing as the block. The gate is the boom. The block is the zone inside. Mixing those two is how guests turn up at Palatupana for a Block 5 booking.

We operate daily in Block 1 and Block 5 when those blocks are open. For a first safari, Palatupana into Block 1 is the right call. For a second drive, Galge into Block 5 covers new ground instead of repeating the same Palatupana loop.

Yala opening times on open blocks are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The gate closes at sunset. Use this Yala gate location map to pick Palatupana, Katagamuwa, or Galge before the 5:30 AM pickup. Morning jeeps still want you in the ticket line before the boom lifts.
Last updated: September 2026. Our local hotel pickup stays 5:30 AM for a 6:00 AM entry. A 5:30 AM start from Mirissa or Ella is the wrong clock. You spend the cool hour on the road. Sleep near Tissa, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama the night before.

Jeep price, permit, and deposit
A private half-day jeep on our packages starts from USD 57 per person when six guests share. Park entrance, taxes, water, and local pickup sit in that figure. The Yala gate location you pick does not change the from-price. A long-distance pickup is extra and is priced by hotel name.
Foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. Our packages put the permit inside the jeep quote, so you are not paying cash at the boom. A USD 30 deposit holds the jeep. The balance is due on arrival. Full-day private jeeps start from USD 72 per person in a group of six.

Best time at each gate
February to July is the driest window. June and July are the peak months for leopards in Block 1, which means Palatupana is at its busiest. Book the jeep before you lock the hotel if those months are your dates.

Light rain does not cancel a drive. We only pull the jeep if DWC closes the block. If Palatupana floods after a storm, we do not force Galge as a same-morning swap unless that was already the plan and the clock still works.
Yala gates versus Udawalawe or Wilpattu
Stay with Yala if leopards and this Yala gate location map are the trip. Switch parks only if the block you wanted is shut and you will not accept Galge.

Udawalawe is the shorter add-on from Tissa. Wilpattu needs a spare night and a northbound transfer. For most guests already in Tissa, the next jeep is still Yala, just a different gate.
