A Yala safari in October 2026 is two different mornings. From 1 October to 15 October, Blocks 1 and 2 stay closed, and the jeep we book is Block 5 from Galge. From 16 October, Block 1 is the first jeep again if the Department of Wildlife Conservation ends the rest on the published date.

Two mornings in one Yala safari in October
The month splits on 15 October 2026. Before that date, Palatupana and Katagamuwa do not run Block 1. After that date, those gates are the Block 1 booking again, unless the rest is extended.
The Yala National Park official site says Blocks 1 and 2 close from 14 September to 15 October 2026, and Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 remain open. Dates checked 22 September 2026. The notice calls it a drought rest. Reopening depends on the weather. If the dates move, we change the zone or we reschedule at no extra charge.

From Tissamaharama, Galge adds about 20 to 30 minutes against a Palatupana run. Pickup for a local hotel is still 5:30 AM, so the extra road time is already in the plan and you are still aiming for a 6:00 AM entry. There is no published park forecast on this page. The numbers below are climate normals for Hambantota, WMO station 43497, for 1961–1990, from the NOAA station file. Hambantota is on the coast. It is not a thermometer inside Block 1 or Block 5.

July in the same file has a mean maximum of 30.6°C and a mean monthly rainfall of 48 mm. October is about as hot, and much wetter, at that station. A wetter normal does not mean the tanks in the park have already refilled. The 2026 rest exists because of drought. Treat 151 mm as the long-term coastal average, not as proof that a given October morning will rain.
Light rain does not cancel a Yala safari in October. We only pull the jeep if the Department of Wildlife Conservation closes the block. After a shower the tracker may change the loop because a track is soft. Bring a light layer for a 5:30 AM pickup. The afternoon is still warm.
What we can say about wildlife
We do not publish a sighting score for October. Leopards live in Block 5. We track pugmarks and alarm calls, and we do not sell a guaranteed sighting. Elephants, spotted deer, peacocks, and water birds are in the park in this month, the same as in any other open month. A greener photograph after rain is not a count of animals.
June and July remain the Block 1 window we write up as the dry-season peak. That month is visiting Yala in July. October does not replace it. The first half of October 2026 is a Galge drive. The second half can be Block 1 again, and it is still later than the February-to-July water-low line on the park’s about page.

How we book the jeep
Open blocks run 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Our morning from Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama starts with a 5:30 AM pickup. The morning drive is in the park from about 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM. An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM. You cannot self-drive a rental car into the blocks. Our driver meets you at the hotel.
A Yala safari in October is confirmed only after we name the gate. Send the date before you pay the deposit. A date of 1 October to 15 October 2026 is a Galge confirmation. A date after 15 October is Block 1 only if the rest has ended. We name the block the night before.

Can I enter at Palatupana in the first half of October?
Not for Block 1. Palatupana and Katagamuwa are closed for that block from 14 September to 15 October 2026. Arrive at Galge, or let us collect you at the hotel and go there.
Does October rain cancel the safari?
Not by itself. We cancel only if the Department of Wildlife Conservation closes the block. A shower can make one track unusable. The tracker then uses another loop inside the same block.
