What visiting Yala in July is for
July is a Block 1 month. Palatupana and Katagamuwa both open that block, and the park hours on an open block are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The whole park does not shut for July. The drought rest we publish is later: Blocks 1 and 2 are closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026.
So the decision in July is not “is the park open?” It is whether you can take the heat, and whether you have a jeep locked before you land. February to July is the dry stretch, because the tanks drop and animals use the open ground. June and July sit at the hot end of that stretch.
A July booking is the wrong tool if you wanted a cool hill-country morning, or if leopards were never the point. Udawalawe is the elephant park, with about 500 elephants on the wildlife page. Wilpattu is a separate northern night. Neither replaces a Palatupana dawn, and a Yala permit does not open them.
Heat and rain in July
Hambantota is the coastal climate station nearest this dry zone. Its 1961–1990 July normal, in the NOAA climate normals for WMO station 43497, is a mean maximum of 30.6°C and a mean minimum of 24.7°C. The highest July maximum in that same record is 35.5°C. Those are station normals, not a forecast for your date, and the open scrub inside the park feels hotter than the coast.
Prices and climate figures were checked on 22 September 2026. We do not quote a rainfall millimetre for the park itself. July sits in the dry window, so a light shower can still fall without cancelling the drive. We pull a jeep only if the Department of Wildlife Conservation closes the block.
The practical result is simple. Dawn is the comfortable hour. By mid-morning the metal of the jeep and the dust on the track are the story. A hat, sunscreen, and water matter more than a rain jacket. Our packages include water. A light layer at the 5:30 AM door is enough, and you will not want it once the sun is up.
Wildlife you can plan around
Palatupana is the default July gate because it opens Block 1, the circuit we use for a dry-season morning. Leopard density is not the chance that your jeep sees a cat. We do not sell a percentage, and we do not sell a guaranteed sighting in any month.
What July does change is the ground. Water is low, cover is thinner than in the northeast monsoon, and animals come to the remaining tanks. Leopards, elephants, sloth bear, spotted deer, sambar, wild boar, jackal, peacock, and mugger crocodile are the residents we brief. Birds are part of the same drive, not a separate ticket.
Morning is the stronger leopard window because cats hunt at night and rest in shade later. Our half-day morning is in the park from about 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM. An extended morning stays out until about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM and runs until about 6:00 PM, with a Tissa pickup around 1:00 PM. Afternoon light is kinder for photos. It is the weaker booking if a leopard was the reason for July.
The July day: gate and clock
From a Tissamaharama, Kirinda, or Palatupana hotel we use Palatupana. The drive from Tissa to that gate is 20 to 25 minutes, so a 5:30 AM collection puts you in the Block 1 line before the 6:00 AM boom. Bring the passport that matches the booking. A photo on a phone is a weak backup.
Katagamuwa is 14 km from Kataragama and also opens Block 1, so a Kataragama hotel can use that gate instead of crossing to Palatupana. Galge, 30 km from Kataragama, is the Block 5 gate. We do not send a standard July leopard booking there. Palatupana is 41 km from Kataragama. Those distances are on the Yala National Park official site.

A 5:30 AM pickup from Ella, Bentota, or Unawatuna spends the cool hour on the road. Sleep near Tissa or Kataragama the night before. Then July is a safari day, not a transfer.
Jeep price in July
Visiting Yala in July does not change the cab tariff. On the official safari-ride page, Block 1 jeep hire at Palatupana or Katagamuwa is LKR 21,450 for a half-day and LKR 31,350 for a full day. Galge is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. Those lines are the Toyota only, for up to six people, and tickets are not included. A private half-day on our packages starts from USD 57 per person when six guests share, with park fees, taxes, water, and local pickup included. A full day starts from USD 72 per person in a group of six. A USD 30 deposit holds the jeep. The room is a separate bill.
A foreign adult permit still starts at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT, paid in LKR at the gate if you hired only the cab. Children aged 6 to 12 pay a lower band. July or September
Choose July if Block 1 at dawn is the point of the trip and you can tolerate the heat. Choose September only if you already hold dates in the south-east and you will accept a different block. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, and we run Block 5 from Galge.
