A Yala safari from Unawatuna is a quoted coast pickup, not a 5:30 AM town. Unawatuna and Galle sit west of the park. We do not publish a kilometre or a departure clock from a hotel door on this beach. If you want the published 5:30 AM collection, sleep in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama.
- The drive we book leaves Unawatuna or Galle, uses the southern expressway toward the Hambantota side, then goes to Tissamaharama and the boom.
- Palatupana and Katagamuwa open Block 1. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6.
- From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, so the jeep is Galge.
- Unawatuna and Galle are on the Coast Line. The park, Palatupana, and Tissamaharama are not. A morning safari is still a road transfer plus a jeep.
- A half-day private jeep starts from USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. The Unawatuna or Galle pickup is extra.
Book the car and the jeep on Yala safari from Galle. Tickets, blocks, and the wider plan sit in the complete Yala tour guide.

The road from Unawatuna
Unawatuna is a beach immediately east of Galle. The drive we book leaves that beach or a Galle Fort hotel, joins the southern expressway, and runs toward the Hambantota side. It then goes inland to Tissamaharama. When Block 1 is open, Palatupana is the boom beyond Tissa. We do not add a Fort stop, a Matara lunch, or a Hambantota town stop before a morning boom. A stop fits the drive back to the coast, after the jeep.
The park homepage, checked 22 September 2026, places Yala 260 km southeast of Colombo. That figure starts in Colombo. It is not an Unawatuna trip and it is not a Galle trip. The same site’s gate table measures Katagamuwa at 14 km, Galge at 30 km, and Palatupana at 41 km from Kataragama. Those kilometres start in Kataragama. They do not start at a Jungle Beach hotel, in Dalawella, or inside Galle Fort.
From a Tissamaharama base, Palatupana is about 20 to 25 minutes. From that same Tissa base, Galge adds about 20 to 30 minutes compared with Palatupana. Both times start in Tissa. Neither time is a measured run from an Unawatuna or Galle door, so this page does not add the legs together and call the sum an Unawatuna drive.
Dalawella, Jungle Beach, and a room inside Galle Fort are different doors. Name the hotel when you book. We price the car from that door. We do not print one alarm for the beach, the Fort, and every guesthouse between them.
Galle Fort the day before
The Fort belongs to the day before the jeep. A morning from this coast is the car and the gate. Walking the ramparts on the way to a 6:00 AM entry misses the boom. Arrive with an afternoon to spare, walk the walls, eat, and sleep. The safari morning is not a sightseeing loop.
The same rule applies if the hotel is in Unawatuna and the Fort is a short hop west. That hop is easy the afternoon before. It is the wrong extra stop when the car is already booked toward the park. On the way back to the coast, a Fort stop can fit if you have asked for it and the jeep has finished.
Train, bus, and car
The Sri Lanka Railways Coast Line station list, checked 22 September 2026, runs from Colombo Fort down the south coast. It records Galle at 113.88 km from Fort, Unawatuna at 119.519 km, and Matara at 156.813 km. Those figures are rail distances from Colombo Fort. They are not a road distance to Palatupana. The same list does not include Hambantota, Tissamaharama, Palatupana, Kirinda, or a Yala station. A train can bring you to Unawatuna or Galle. It does not finish the safari, and we do not publish a road time from the station to a boom.
A bus can run the coast toward Matara, Hambantota, and Tissamaharama in daylight. You still need a jeep at a boom. A public bus is the wrong tool for a 6:00 AM entry, because the park opens then and the 5:30 AM collection is for hotels already in the four towns above. Use the bus if you will sleep in one of those towns and take the jeep the next morning.
The tool for a morning safari from an Unawatuna or Galle hotel is a private car. Our driver can collect that hotel. The price sits apart from the jeep. It depends on the hotel and on whether the car returns you to the coast after the drive. Send the hotel name with the date and the guest count.
Park clocks and a quoted pickup
Park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We collect hotels in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama at 5:30 AM, so the jeep is at the boom for the 6:00 AM opening. The morning drive inside the park runs to about 10:30 AM. An extended morning runs to about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep runs from about 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. A full day runs from the 5:30 AM collection until 6:00 PM.
Those clocks belong to the four pickup towns. A Yala safari from Unawatuna starts earlier than 5:30 AM, and the exact time is part of the quote. We do not publish one departure for Jungle Beach, Dalawella, and Galle Fort as if they were the same door. Afternoon entry is the easier sleep from this coast. Tell us the hotel and we will say whether an afternoon jeep, inside the park from about 1:30 PM, is realistic for that door.
| Where you sleep | Clock we publish | Boom when Block 1 is open |
|---|---|---|
| Tissamaharama, Kirinda, or Palatupana | 5:30 AM | Palatupana |
| Kataragama | 5:30 AM | Katagamuwa |
| Unawatuna, Galle Fort, Dalawella, or Jungle Beach | Quoted from the hotel door | Palatupana, after Tissamaharama |
During the Block 1 closure below, every row in that table goes to Galge instead.
One jeep, or a night nearer the boom
One morning from Unawatuna is a quoted transfer, the jeep, and a return to the coast. Two jeeps are simpler if you sleep in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama. Those beds are on the 5:30 AM list. Other beds are in where to stay near Yala. We do not promise a return to the beach by a set hour. We are based at Palatupana, so a hotel there removes the coast transfer from the morning.
Send the date, the hotel name, the passport names, and whether the car returns to the coast. Say if you want a morning jeep, an afternoon jeep, or both. We check whether Block 1 is open before we confirm the boom. How that booking is put together is in the step-by-step booking guide.
Which boom the road uses
A zone is not a gate. Block 1 is entered at Palatupana or at Katagamuwa. Block 2 has limited public access and closes with Block 1 during the 2026 rest. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we sell. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6. Gate kilometres and the difference between a boom and a block are on the Yala gate location map.
When Block 1 is open, a car from Unawatuna through Tissamaharama uses Palatupana. Katagamuwa is the Block 1 boom if you sleep in Kataragama. It is not the default end of this road, and it is not a back door into Block 5. From 14 September to 15 October 2026 the park homepage closes Blocks 1 and 2. Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 stay open. In that window the pickup goes to Galge. We do not sell Situlpawwa, Buttala, or Block 3 as a tourist jeep. What is open then is on is Yala open in September.
A leopard is not part of the booking. We do not rank months on this page.
Jeep price and the transfer
Our jeep is private, for your group, up to six people, and it is not a self-drive. A half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. A full day starts from USD 72 on the same basis. Children aged 6 to 12 pay less, and children under 6 are usually free. Bring passports. The deposit is USD 30. Prices checked 22 September 2026. The Unawatuna or Galle transfer is not inside that from-price. It is quoted by vehicle, hotel, and whether the car returns to the coast. The full split of jeep, fees, and pickup is in the Yala safari price guide.
The park’s own jeep hire page is a different bill. Tickets are not included. A private Toyota 4×4, up to six people, is LKR 21,450 for a Block 1 half-day at Palatupana or Katagamuwa, and LKR 31,350 for a full day. Galge, for Blocks 5 and 6, is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. That page includes pickup in Tissamaharama and Kirinda. Other pickups, including an Unawatuna or Galle hotel, are on request. Those LKR lines are the park’s hire, not our package. Prices checked 22 September 2026.
Foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. Locals and SAARC sit on different bands. The bands are on the entrance fee guide. Our package puts the permit inside the jeep quote. The coast car is still a separate line.
FAQ
How far is Unawatuna from Yala?
We do not publish a kilometre from an Unawatuna hotel to Palatupana. The road we book uses the southern expressway, then Tissamaharama. The park’s own kilometres are measured from Kataragama, and the 260 km line on the park homepage is from Colombo. On the railway, Unawatuna is 119.519 km from Colombo Fort. That is a station distance, not the drive to the boom.
What time do you leave Unawatuna?
We do not print a departure clock. Unawatuna is not on the 5:30 AM list. The time is part of the quote once we have the hotel name. Hotels in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama are collected at 5:30 AM.
Can I see Galle Fort on the way to the morning jeep?
No. Do the Fort the day before. A morning from Unawatuna or Galle goes to the boom. A Fort stop can fit on the drive back if you have asked for it.
Is there a train from Unawatuna to Yala?
No. Unawatuna and Galle are on the Coast Line. The list we checked does not include a park station, Palatupana, or Tissamaharama. The park is still a road journey after the train.
Is Unawatuna pickup included in the jeep price?
No. USD 57 and USD 72 are the jeep with park fees, for a person in a group of six. An Unawatuna or Galle hotel is quoted separately. Prices checked 22 September 2026.
Book the jeep on Yala safari tours or on the Galle pickup page and send the hotel name. The deposit is USD 30, and we confirm the boom before we take it.
