Bentota to Yala is a south-coast road transfer. Join the Southern Expressway near Aluthgama, stay on it toward the Hambantota end, then continue to Tissamaharama and the gate you have booked. A 6:00 AM entry works if you sleep in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama. A same-morning start from a Bentota hotel is a night drive, and this page does not set a fixed departure clock for it.

The Bentota to Yala route
The line is the hotel, the Welipenna interchange, the Southern Expressway, the road to Tissamaharama, then the gate. Welipenna is the access for Bentota and Aluthgama. Mattala airport is not the park.
The Southern Expressway, E01, is maintained by the Road Development Authority. The route table on the E01 expressway page, checked 22 September 2026, gives the full highway as 222 km from Kottawa to Mattala. That length is the whole road, not a Bentota hotel to Palatupana. The Matara–Hambantota section opened on 23 February 2020.
The same table lists Welipenna as interchange 5, at kilometre 46.0, with Aluthgama 10.3 km away on the B157. Bentota is the next Coast Line stop after Aluthgama, so a Bentota, Aluthgama, or Induruwa hotel uses that feeder. Send the hotel name. The feeder changes. The expressway does not.
After the Hambantota end, you are on an ordinary road to Tissamaharama. Palatupana is then 20 to 25 minutes. A Bentota hotel and an Induruwa hotel are not the same pin, so we do not publish one door-to-gate kilometre total.

Coast road through Galle
The older coast road is the A2 through Galle, Ahangama, and Matara. The expressway article contrasts that road with E01. Use the A2 if the expressway is closed, or if you are already moving in daylight and the afternoon jeep is the booking. Town traffic makes it a poor tool for a pre-dawn start.
Do not add a Galle stop before a 6:00 AM entry. The fort can wait for the return. If the trip actually starts in Galle rather than Bentota, the booking page is Yala safari from Galle.
Where to sleep before the safari
On an open block the park is open from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. A morning jeep is in the park from 6:00 AM until about 10:30 AM. An extended morning runs until about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep runs from about 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. A full day uses both windows and still starts with the 5:30 AM local pickup.
Those clocks belong to hotels near the park. We meet guests in Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama at 5:30 AM. That is the pickup we can plan. A Bentota departure for the same 6:00 AM entry is a night drive. The time depends on the hotel, the feeder, and the traffic, so ask for that transfer as its own quote.
For the morning drive, sleep near the park and send the hotel name with the booking. The how to book a Yala safari page lists the date, the hotel, the headcount, and the passport names. If you would rather leave Bentota after breakfast, book the afternoon jeep and have the transfer priced from the hotel door. The morning and afternoon safari page compares the two drives.
A morning jeep and a return to Bentota on the same day is a long day. Two jeeps need a night near the park. A Tissamaharama safari start is the one that matches the 5:30 AM pickup.

Which gate after you arrive
A block is not a gate. From a Tissamaharama night, Palatupana is the usual Block 1 entrance. Katagamuwa also opens Block 1, and it is the gate if you sleep in Kataragama. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6. Block 2 has limited public access, and it closes with Block 1 during the 2026 rest. We do not sell Blocks 3 and 4 as a first jeep.
The park homepage, checked 22 September 2026, gives these distances from Kataragama. They are not distances from Bentota.

Allow about 20 to 30 minutes more for Galge than for Palatupana from the same Tissa base. Gate choice is on the Yala gate location map, and Katagamuwa has its own entrance page.
The 2026 rest and the time of year
From 14 September to 15 October 2026 the park closes Blocks 1 and 2. Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 stay open. On those dates we book Galge, not Palatupana or Katagamuwa. The homepage says the reopen depends on the weather, so read that notice again before you travel. The closure itself is covered on is Yala open in September.
The homepage table lists the best time as June to September. The about Yala page says February to July, when water in the park is low, and it still says only two blocks are open. Use the homepage and the jeep-hire page for the gate, not that older line. Neither best-time line is a sighting promise. Month-by-month planning is on is Yala open all year. The about page also says the north-east monsoon, September to December, is when the park gets most of its rain. That is a description, not a forecast for the drive.
Jeep price and the Bentota transfer
Our private half-day is USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. A full day is USD 72 per person on the same basis. A USD 30 deposit holds the jeep. Children aged 6 to 12 pay a lower band. Children under six are usually free, and they still need a document at the gate. Prices checked 22 September 2026. The vehicle is a private jeep for your group. It is not a self-drive, and we do not put you in a jeep with another booking.
That price is the safari. It is not the drive from Bentota. On the park’s own hire page, pickup inside Tissamaharama and Kirinda is included, and pickups outside that area are arranged on request. A Bentota hotel is outside that area. Ask us to price it on the same quote as the jeep.
If you hire the park’s Toyota 4×4 directly, the safari ride page on 22 September 2026 lists LKR 21,450 for a half day and LKR 31,350 for a full day at Palatupana or Katagamuwa. Galge is LKR 23,100 for a half day and LKR 32,900 for a full day. Those rates are per jeep, for up to six people, and they do not include tickets. Tickets are paid at the gate in LKR. The park says the dollar indication can change with the exchange rate and with taxes, so the gate counter is the place to confirm the permit.
Ahangama and the hill road
Ahangama is further east on the same coast. The Coast Line table lists it at 134.159 km from Colombo Fort, against 60.958 km for Bentota, so less of the south-west coast is left before Matara. Sleep near the park for a morning jeep. We do not publish a separate drive time for Ahangama.
Nuwara Eliya and Ella are not this expressway. The hill road is on the Ella to Yala route. A night in Tissamaharama still beats a midnight start from the hills.
Train from Bentota
There is no train to Palatupana. Bentota station is on the Coast Line. The Sri Lanka Railways station table, checked 22 September 2026, lists Bentota at 60.958 km from Colombo Fort, Aluthgama at 59.661 km, and Matara at 156.813 km. Palatupana and Tissamaharama are not on that list.
The train covers the south-west coast only. From Matara you still need a road transfer to Tissamaharama and then the gate.
