Yala Block 1 is the default. It holds one of the highest recorded densities of Sri Lankan leopard. Therefore a single morning there beats a scenic loop that never enters the park.
However, Wilpattu also holds leopards. It sits in the north and needs its own night. Meanwhile, Udawalawe is an elephant park. A herd there is not a cat plan.
You cannot self-drive inside the fence. The tracker sits in the front seat. We go to the desk with the permit and the jeep as one booking.
A sighting is a stop, not a chase. The tracker reads pug marks, alarm calls, and the way deer freeze. Then we hold the jeep so the cat can cross or stay on the bank. Because a second jeep that crowds the track ruins the view for everyone, we keep our distance.
Also, do not ask us to leave the road. The rule is the track. A cat in a tree still counts. A cat that walks off into grass is still a sighting. We do not follow it on foot.
The 5:30 AM clock for a leopard morning
Park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Those clocks sit on the Yala National Park official site. Last updated: September 2026. Therefore the boom, not the hotel breakfast, sets the morning.
Leave Tissa, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama at 5:30 AM. Then you are in the Block 1 line before the boom lifts. After that, by 9:00 AM the tarmac cooks and the cats move into cover.
An afternoon jeep picks Tissa around 1:00 PM for a 1:30 PM entry. You stay until the 6:00 PM close. For example, waterholes can still work late. The dawn slot is still the one we book first.

Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes from Tissamaharama and opens Block 1. Leopards sightings in Sri Lanka on a default morning use this boom or Katagamuwa.
