How long Tissa to Palatupana takes
Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes from Tissamaharama in the dark we actually drive. Therefore a 5:30 AM door still reaches the 6:00 AM boom. A 6:15 AM lobby call is already late for Block 1.
Also, the park sits 260 km southeast of Colombo. A guest who leaves the city after dinner will not make that boom. So the useful plan is a Tissa night, then a short run at dawn.
Kirinda hotels use the same clock. We still collect at 5:30 AM. However, add a few minutes if the room sits south of the Tissa junction. Tell us the hotel the night before.
Also, send the hotel name, the guest count, and whether you want morning or full day. Then we cut the permit for Palatupana, or for Galge if the block is shut. A change at the door costs the first hour.
Is Tissamaharama inside the park?
No. Tissamaharama is a town outside the fence. The jeep queue is at the gate, not on the high street. You need a park jeep and a permit after the boom.
Also, you cannot self-drive inside the fence. So our driver meets the hotel. Then the tracker sits in the front seat once you are through the gate.

Palatupana into Block 1 is the default from a Tissa hotel. Katagamuwa is 14 km from Kataragama and also opens Block 1. Meanwhile, Galge is the Block 5 gate, 30 km from Kataragama. Palatupana is 41 km from Kataragama.

So a Kataragama room can be the shorter run to Katagamuwa. A Tissa room is the shorter run to Palatupana. Instead, do not ask us to switch gates in the lobby at 5:30 AM. The permit is cut the night before.

What time we collect a Tissa hotel
Meanwhile, park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We collect Tissa, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM. Then you are in the Block 1 line before the boom lifts.
The first two hours are the window we want. After that, by 9:00 AM the tarmac cooks and the cats move into cover. So a 7:00 AM breakfast in Tissa is a late safari, not a dawn one.
An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM and stays until 6:00 PM. For example, we leave a Tissa hotel about 1:00 PM. However, dawn is still the stronger booking for a leopard.

Also, a coast hotel is a different product. Galle and Unawatuna leave about 1:45 AM because the drive is about 170 km. Tangalle leaves about 4:00 AM for a run of about 80 km. Therefore a Tissa bed removes that night start.
There is no train to Palatupana. So we do not put a dawn guest on a bus either. The 5:30 AM door is a private car from the hotel to the boom.
In addition, the tanks on the Block 1 tracks are where we stop for elephant and crocodile. A herd is common. However, a leopard is the reason for the 5:30 AM door, not a line on the permit.
Season for a Tissamaharama Yala safari
February to July is the dry window the park about page names, because the tanks drop and animals use the open ground. Also, June and July are the peak months we see for leopards in Block 1. Book the jeep before you land.
From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed. Therefore a Palatupana queue will not open. So we move the morning to Galge. However, if the reopen date moves, the hotel can stay and the gate changes.
