A Tissamaharama Yala safari is a 5:30 AM pickup from a hotel in town, then a short run to the boom. When Block 1 is open, Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes from that hotel, and the park opens at 6:00 AM. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, so the same Tissa door goes to Galge, which adds about 20 to 30 minutes compared with Palatupana.
- Tissamaharama sits outside the fence. The jeep queue is at the gate. You cannot self-drive inside the park.
- We collect Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM. A hotel on the coast is a separate quote, and this page does not print that departure clock.

Why the night is in Tissamaharama
The park homepage, checked 22 September 2026, places Yala 260 km southeast of Colombo. That figure starts in Colombo. A guest who leaves the city after dinner will not be at a 6:00 AM boom. The useful plan is a night in Tissamaharama, then the short run at dawn.
There is no train to Tissamaharama, Palatupana, Kirinda, or Yala. The Sri Lanka Railways Coast Line list, checked 22 September 2026, records station distances from Colombo Fort. It includes Galle, Unawatuna, and Matara. It does not include Hambantota, Tissamaharama, Palatupana, Kirinda, or a Yala station. A train or a daylight bus can reach the south or the town. Neither one is the 6:00 AM boom. The 5:30 AM collection is a private car from the hotel.
A hotel in Galle, Unawatuna, Tangalle, Ella, or Bentota is a quoted pickup. Those doors are not on the 5:30 AM list. The Unawatuna travel guide covers a coast start. This page does not print a departure clock or a kilometre for any of those hotels.
Palatupana from a Tissa hotel
When Block 1 is open, Palatupana is 20 to 25 minutes from a Tissamaharama hotel. A 5:30 AM door still reaches the 6:00 AM boom. That time is the run we use from town in the dark. It is not a measured minute count from every guesthouse lane, so name the hotel the night before.
Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels use the same 5:30 AM clock. Tell us the hotel name, the guest count, and whether you want a morning jeep or a full day. We cut the permit for Palatupana, or for Galge when Block 1 is shut. A different boom at the door is a new permit.
Tissamaharama is not inside the park. After the boom you need a park jeep and a permit. Our driver meets the hotel. A tracker rides once you are through the gate. The vehicle is ours, not a self-drive.
Which boom the permit uses
A zone is not a gate. Block 1 is entered at Palatupana or at Katagamuwa. Block 2 has limited public access and closes with Block 1 during the 2026 rest. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we sell. Galge opens Blocks 5 and 6 on the park hire page. Kataragama is the city. Katagamuwa is the boom. Gate kilometres, and the difference between a boom and a block, are on the Yala gate location map.

Those kilometres start in Kataragama. They do not start at a Tissa hotel door, and they are not a road from Colombo. A Kataragama room can be the shorter run to Katagamuwa. A Tissa room is the shorter run to Palatupana. Do not ask for a gate change in the lobby at 5:30 AM. The permit is cut the night before.
Galge is not a Block 1 entrance, and Katagamuwa does not open Block 5. We do not sell Situlpawwa, Buttala, or Block 3 as a tourist jeep.
What time a Tissamaharama Yala safari leaves
Park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. We collect Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, and Kataragama hotels at 5:30 AM, so the jeep is at the boom for the opening. The morning drive inside the park runs to about 10:30 AM. An extended morning uses the same 5:30 AM start and runs to about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep is inside the park from about 1:30 PM until 6:00 PM. A full day runs from the 5:30 AM collection until 6:00 PM.
We do not publish a fixed afternoon pickup time from a Tissa door. The afternoon entry is about 1:30 PM, and the door time is confirmed with the hotel when you book. Morning and full day stay on the 5:30 AM collection.

The 2026 rest
From 14 September to 15 October 2026, the park homepage closes Blocks 1 and 2. Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 stay open. A Palatupana queue will not open in that window. A Tissamaharama morning goes to Galge. From the same Tissa base, that adds about 20 to 30 minutes compared with Palatupana.
The hotel can stay in Tissamaharama if the reopen date moves. The gate is what changes. We confirm the boom the night before the jeep. This page does not rank a month, and it does not treat the closure as a sign that waterholes have refilled.
Jeep price from a Tissa hotel
Our jeep is private, for your group, up to six people. A half-day starts from USD 57 per person in a group of six, with park fees included. A full day starts from USD 72 on the same basis. Children aged 6 to 12 pay less, and children under 6 are usually free. Bring passports. The deposit is USD 30. Prices checked 22 September 2026. From a Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama hotel, the 5:30 AM collection is part of that jeep. A hotel outside those four towns is quoted separately. The room is still a separate bill. The park’s own jeep hire page is a different bill. Tickets are not included. A private Toyota 4×4, up to six people, is LKR 21,450 for a Block 1 half-day at Palatupana or Katagamuwa, and LKR 31,350 for a full day. Galge, for Blocks 5 and 6, is LKR 23,100 half-day and LKR 32,900 full-day. That page includes pickup in Tissamaharama and Kirinda. Other pickups are on request. Foreign adult permits start at about USD 25 before service charges and VAT. Locals and SAARC sit on different bands. The bands are on the entrance fee guide. Our package puts the permit inside the jeep quote.

What the morning does not include
A leopard is not part of the booking. Neither is an elephant, a sloth bear, or any other animal. The wildlife list names what the park records. The leopard page covers sightings without turning a morning into a promise. We stay on the designated track.
The visitor guide, checked 22 September 2026, asks you to keep the phone silent, skip the flash, not honk, not feed animals, and leave before closing. If something goes wrong, stay in the vehicle and follow the tracker.

Is Tissamaharama inside Yala?
