Is Yala National Park open all year? Yes. The park does not shut for a season. A public block runs in every month. From 14 September to 15 October 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 are closed, and Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 stay open. The jeep we book in that window is Block 5 from Galge.

The park stays open
Older notes that say visitors are not allowed from September to October are describing the Block 1 rest as if it were the whole park. It is not. Palatupana and Katagamuwa stop running Block 1 in that window. Galge does not.
Is Yala National Park open all year on the morning you already hold a hotel for? Ask which block the permit names. The date alone does not tell you the gate. A Block 1 ticket is useless at Galge, and a Galge ticket is useless in the Palatupana queue.
We sell two drives. Block 1, from Palatupana or Katagamuwa, is the first jeep when that block is open. Block 5, from Galge, is the second drive, and the one we use while Blocks 1 and 2 are on rest. We do not quote Block 2 as a standard drive. Blocks 3 and 4 are not a jeep we offer, even on dates when the park leaves them open. Which zone is which is on the Yala safari zones page.
The 2026 block rest
Is Yala National Park open all year through the late dry season? Yes, on the blocks the park has left open. The Yala National Park official site says Blocks 1 and 2 close from 14 September to 15 October 2026, and Blocks 3, 4, 5, and 6 remain open. Dates checked 22 September 2026.
That notice is a drought rest. The park says the reopening depends on the weather. If the Department of Wildlife Conservation extends it, we move the jeep to the open block or we reschedule at no extra charge. We confirm the block the night before. Do not drive to Palatupana after 14 September 2026 and expect a Block 1 boom.

The day-by-day September plan, including why we do not send you to Palatupana in that rest, is on the September opening page. From Tissamaharama, Galge adds about 20 to 30 minutes against a Palatupana run. A 5:30 AM pickup still aims for a 6:00 AM entry.
Hours on an open block
Open hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The head office is 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Those hours do not stop because the month changed. A closed block is a different boom, not a shorter day on the block that is still open.
Our morning pickup from Tissamaharama, Kirinda, Palatupana, or Kataragama is 5:30 AM, so you are in the queue before the 6:00 AM boom. The morning drive is in the park from about 6:00 AM to 10:30 AM. An extended morning stays out until about 12:30 PM. An afternoon jeep enters about 1:30 PM and runs until about 6:00 PM.
You cannot self-drive a rental car into the blocks. The ticket, the tracker, and the jeep are one plan. Our driver meets you at the hotel.
What the park calls the best time
The park publishes two best-time lines, and they are not the same sentence. The about Yala page says the best time is February to July, when water levels are low and animals come into the open. June to September is the line in the homepage table. That same table calls the climate dry most of the year.
Use both, then apply the 2026 rest. February to July is the water-low window, and Block 1 is open through it. June and July sit inside both official lines, and July is the month we have written up on its own: visiting Yala in July. From 14 September 2026, the “June to September” line is no longer a Palatupana morning. It is a Galge morning until 15 October.
We do not rank August, November, December, or January with a sighting score. The park is open. The block is what we check. A month with no closure notice is not a promise of the same drive as a June morning in Block 1.
What we confirm the night before
Send the date, the hotel, and how many people are in the jeep. We reply with the block. If your date is 14 September to 15 October 2026, the reply is Galge unless the Department of Wildlife Conservation has moved the dates.
