Distance and drive time to Palatupana
Unawatuna to Palatupana is about 170 km. However, Tissamaharama sits closer. Palatupana Gate is then 20 to 25 minutes from Tissa. Therefore the boom, not the town, sets the clock we quote.
Also, our drivers clock 3.5 to 4 hours in the dark. Rain or a slow lorry can add 15 to 20 minutes. So we keep a buffer before the 6:00 AM boom.

Our driver meets you at the Unawatuna or Galle hotel. Then you sleep in the car and we go straight to Palatupana. Because the boom does not wait, long-distance pickup is a separate line on the quote.
Day buses run the coast toward Matara and Tissa. Then you still need a jeep to the boom. A 2:00 AM bus does not hit the Block 1 queue. Instead, use the bus only if you will sleep in Tissa and safari the next morning.
Best things to do in Galle before a Yala safari
So do them the day before. The useful list is the Fort ramparts, a short walk, and an early dinner.
Therefore arrive with an afternoon to spare. Walk the walls while the light is still good. Then eat and sleep. After that, the safari morning is only the car and the gate.

So keep the list short. The Fort, the rampart walk, and the lighthouse corner are enough.

Park hours are 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Also, the gate closes at sunset. We pick up Tissa hotels at 5:30 AM. An Unawatuna start has to be earlier because of the transfer.
Day trip versus overnight near Tissa
Yes, you can do one morning from the beach. The usual pattern is a 1:45 AM pickup, a morning jeep, then a long ride back. However, two drives still need a bed in Tissa or Palatupana.
Also, we run from 55 Palatupana. If you sleep next to the park, our driver meets you at 5:30 AM. Therefore that is the cleaner leopard window. A same-day return still works for one jeep. However, you will be back on the sand late, tired and warm.
If you want the park without the 2:00 AM alarm, book the afternoon slot and leave after breakfast. However, leopard odds are lower than dawn. Meanwhile, elephants at tanks and sunset light still make the drive worth it.
